Santa Cruz Tenereffe

I managed the 5 hour motor into Santa Cruz Marina. My friends Sylvie and David were on stand-by in case I needed a tow. I made it unassisted but know the Diesel engine looms large. When I bought the boat back in March 2004, I was told to clean it and have it serviced by a professional. Well I guess I didn't know what I was asking for, because the mechanic I got to do the work only changed the oil filter and replaced the water pump. Now, having spoken with David, a self made mechanical man, he actually loves working on his engine, I have to face up to my aging 34 year old engine. The bilges are an oily mess. I suspect the engine is leaking oil but I can't identify the problem because the engine is painted blue and covered in rust and oil. So it's scrub adub dub, wash out the oil pan and bilges, paint the engine white, replace the thermometer, and re-tap the thermometer casing. I snapped off on old bolt in its hole, back in Gomera. That involves taking off the water manifold and finding someone to re-screw the holes and find replacement bolts for all four points. Now I am on the engine I might as well face the starting motor which has not worked since Barbate back in June of last year. Got to get that out and find someone who can re-condition an electrical motor. I could be here for weeks!
