This picture was taken on the day we left Fornells Harbour. We had a bit of an adventure getting there in the first place. Our passage to Sardinia was dogged with misfortune and I am sure it had nothing to do with the bananas on board.
I was well aware of the date. Time was moving on and my planned departure of the mediterranean was looking like it might just get delayed but I was intent on escaping the Balerics. I had been there since June. Weather prognostication looked good but not overly so. On the 6th we set sail from Mahon only to be frustrated by no winds and then an over heating engine. We made for the nearest safe anchorage under sail. Miraculously the wind freshened as soon as we discovered a problem. We anchored under sail and got cracking on the engine. Luckely it was a shredded impeller ( a paddle wheel thing that makes the cooling intake pump work) and I had a spare! Off to bed and tomorrow we headed for Sardinia!
Well those bananas were still on board, less the two from breakfast. We were thwarted with easterly winds on the nose. Not to give up though, the wind came round to the south east and we could make the NE coast of Sardinia. Well we slogged and we slogged, through rain, thunder and lightning making Port Conte in the wee hours of the morning 3 days later. We travelled 196 nautical miles in 36 hours and 15 minutes. We logged the highest recorded speed for the good ship Compromise @ 7.0 knots and popped 5 sail ties, from the mast's track but it did not matter for we were anchored in a well protected and safe harbour.
By the way: The bananas on bouard were actually plantains but still causing problems. In the morning I had to replace the alternater fan belt. Once again those vital spares came to the for. Next stop Alghero . . .
