The Islas de Bayona

The moments in life when everything come together perfectly are rare. I always think of the best days are the ones that come at you unexpected, that present themselves to you like a gift. The anchorage off the Isles de San Martin was one such gift. Ed and I had decided to explore the Galician coast a bit once we had made landfall in Camarinas. We decided on this particular day to head for Bayona. It was a pleasant days sail. Not ideal, we had started the day under power but we were not complaining. The weather was mild and the sun was out. On our approach to Bayona I noticed a couple of boats anchored with an entire bay to themselves. The anchorage looked spectacular. We found our own private bay and dropped the hook and went for a swim. It was a great feeling being protected from the North Westerly wind on a remote Island on the periphery of the Atlantic. Before us the water was aquamarine, the sandy beach white and the landscape of the Island scraggy and rugged. A few discrete villa, looking somewhat disused and boarded up, dotted the hillside.

We anchored, passed Spanish customs. Out temporary solitude was shattered. It was just formalities. Went for a swim, had dinner and watched Donny Darko on DVD as a final end to the day. We were on holiday. That was for sure.
